So if Mormon temple garments offer spiritual protection, why is it OK to take them off during basketball?
From the Initiatory:
"Inasmuch as you do not defile it, but are true and faithful to your covenants, it [i.e., the garment] will be a shield and a protection to you against the power of the destroyer until you have finished your work on the earth."
Many Mormons deny (with good reason) that the special underwear they receive as part of the temple endowment provides them with any physical protection. They insist the protection is spiritual. But then why is it OK to take the garment off for athletics?

So if Mormon temple garments offer spiritual protection, why is it OK to take them off during basketball?
In respect to the under garment it should never be taken off, I my self do not understand why some one would take it off to play a game, we sweat all the time, so this should not be an excuse to take it off. For my self I would not take it off .When one take it off they are not worthy of a temple recommend. I ride my bike many times thru out the day I sweat a lot, and all I do is change my under garment when I sock it thru sweating . I wish to be protected by wearing my under garment all the time .No excuse not to wear it obedience unto Gods commandments protects the obedient.
I don’t wear underwear
You mean they really have magic underwear? lqtm….. Anyhow, everybody knows the devil hates basketball.
Satan hates sports, especially basketball.
You’ll take your time anywhere, anywhere you roam.
If you think the bible is ENOUGH of God’s word, you’re right;
it’s enough to send you to hell.
This is not to say it’s wrong or that you’ll go to hell for abiding
by its precepts.
This is to say, there are an eternity of eternities.
Keep searching. Keeping obtaining knowledge.
The book of mormon is just a bit more.
More good is what mormon means in a certain
variation of the Egyptian language of old time.
Mormons gave up any claim to rationality long ago. They’re a bunch of loonies, they know they’re loonies but living as loonies is what they’re going to do and no one will ever stop them.
Well, this is kinda an irrational question. I’m LDS, but still too young to get married, but I really don’t think that taking off garments for athletics is gonna be a big deal. I don’t know much about the garments, but it isn’t like you would be excommunicated if you take them off for like 3 hours
WHAT! I never knew that they got special undies.
How very intriguing.
In many ways, though to a far, far lesser extent, a Bible would offer the same spiritual protection as the garments. It reminds us of promises we have made to obey God. That’s a very strong protection, because it keeps us from making choices that would lead to sin and unhappiness…but would you take a Bible into a basketball game? Would you risk letting something so important become stained with sweat and dirt? Or would you leave it somewhere safe during that period of physical activity, taking it up again the moment your body is clean and you aren’t in danger of dirtying what is sacred and precious?
Again, the garments only offer spiritual protection. They don’t protect us from fire or bullets or even scrapes and bruises. They protect our minds and souls and keep us on the right path to God. When we remove the garments for exercise or sports, our minds and bodies are focused on the activity. There’s not as much chance for sin, and so, out of respect for the garment’s symbolism and in order to protect them, we can remove them for that very short time. Once we’ve showered and are clean again, we put them back on immediately. This is a choice we make as individuals, however. Some choose to remove their garments only for periods of exercise. Others keep them on even then. Either option is acceptable.
Why are you so obsessed with LDS underwear?
Mormons change the rules as they go.
