Should I JUNK a car or should I give up for a DONATION?
So I have a 1998 Green Jetta (w 180.000 miles) that is in very poor condition. The car has too many problems that is not convenient for me to pay for all the repairs its needs. And to top it off, I did not pay for the registration fee’s last year and I don’t have the option anymore for PNO last year’s fee 0. (this does not include this year fee’s).
QUESTION:
How much do junk yards pay for a car like this? If any. And would they deal with all the past due registration fee’s?
OR
Donated and get some sort of tax right-off?
Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

If you junk it, you’ll most likely get somewhere around $300 for it.
Junk yards don’t care about past due registrations. What they paid varies. They pay by the ton. It may be as little as $35 per ton right now.
A tax write off for your car would be very minimal. In my experience, its always better to get cash for your vehicle unless you are keen on the proceeds from your old vehicle going to a particular charity.
Put your vehicle on ebay and list all the problems. Maybe someone needs parts off of the car that are still usable.
You will get about a hundred dollars at a junk yard, you can write it off if you donate it, or if it does not pass smog and is labeled as a gross polluter you can get exactly 1000 from the gov.
Call your local wreck-out yard to see how much they would give you for it. They will generally pick it up.
I would donate it, theres TONS of places that will take it.
And you’ll get a big tax write off.
Selling it, you could have problems selling a car that isnt road-worthy or if you dont have a pink-slip for it.
And you’ll probably just get Lowballers trying to cut your price down to a couple hundred bucks.
A junkyard is going to give you DIRT for that car….
Then turn around and sell all the parts and make $2000 easily.
(engine, brakes,tranny,fenders,windows,seats,etc…..)
YOU should try selling off the parts individually, you can really make alot of money that way sometimes.
Theres ALWAYS people on craigslist looking for spare parts….windows, tires, rims,Computer Chips, Dashboard parts, switches…theres always weird parts that someone is having trouble finding….junkyards can be a huge rip-off sometimes….
Try going on a Jetta forum and selling the car off as a Giant Parts car or sell the parts individually.
If you play it right, you can make more than you would selling the car as a Whole.
But DONATING the car will make you look the best and get a tax write-off.
